My Bakery Job

Bakery activities

I work at a Bakery on a per-time basis, and it has been fun, stressful, and sometimes intriguing. My job description basically entails scooping cookies, assisting in making pizza, pita, and naan dough, spraying trays, icing cookies, slicing loaf, staging, and labelling among others. And I can now tell you for a fact that Americans consume a lot of sugarπŸ˜‚πŸ˜†

On one particular day, I was working with a colleague and a manager/ supervisor walked up to my colleague and told her to remove her AirPods from her ears because it is against the work rules. A few minutes after, my colleague rested her chest on the table (work area) and this same manager told her never to lay on the work table and can go rest outside if she wanted to rest. We had to clean and sanitize the table afterward. My colleague was not happy about this experience and she kept lamenting and complaining about how mean this manager is.

The next day again, my colleague had her AirPods plugged in her ears while working. This time, the manager was upset and told her to remove the AirPods in a fierce tone. After a few minutes, my colleague rested on a pile of trays and the manager was really furious and told her to either change her department (That is, work in another unit other than the bakery) or obey the rules of the bakery.

My colleague obeyed but she was upset. She kept mentioning how she feels the manager should be nice because the manager is black and from Africa. She believes that since the manager is also an African, she's supposed to be nice, and lenient with her and not as strict or harsh.

Thinking about it, I believe that is it because the manager is African that she's that strict with other African workers. This might be because she has expectations and believes that Africans should not fall short but instead, have an excellent work ethic. It's probably because she loves Africans that she believes she has to be strict with Africans.

When I was in secondary school, my elder sister was a senior prefect and if I am ever among those she would be punishing, my punishment would be greater than others. Not because she did not love me, but probably because she does and she expects me not to fall short.

In the same vein, God also has expectations upon our lives by the virtue of being a child of God. Because we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and personal savior, there is an expectation upon our lives. There is a way we are expected to behave. God expects us to walk with Him. He expects that we grow with Him in love and truth. He expects that we love just as He loves the church. He expects that we are imitators of Christ. Do these expectations show that He does not like us or that He is mean? NO!

Recently in church, I have been reminded that Gods' wrath against sin comes from a place of love and shows how much HE cares and loves us. Hebrews 12 verse 6 says that God disciplines those He loves and chastens everyone He accepts as his child.

I guess we should be happy if God chastens us πŸ˜ƒbecause it only shows that He sees us as His own and as His child.

So, never think that God isn't for you as He loves you and cares so much about you.

Also, Psalms 23 says '...His rod and staff, they comfort me...' meaning that His discipline is also to comfort us and bring us to a place of correction. Thus, let's be sensitive to what God is doing per time and quit our consistent laments and complaints.

I pray God helps us all.

      Thanks for reading.
And no, I don't interact with customers. Our customers here are other restaurants, dining rooms, and food outlets.

I should probably write about cultural shocks too.
      I'm glad you liked this.
