Sleep

Shalewa Babatayo Ajenipa

I boarded a bus some weeks ago and everyone to my right and left (everyone on my row) was fast asleep. Before I knew it, I started feeling sleepy. I don't know if my "feeling sleeping" was because others were sleeping already. If you have any logical explanation for feeling sleeping or sleeping because others are doing so, please drop your comments in the comments section.

I have also noticed a lot of times that whenever someone besides me yawns, I tend to yawn. Or whenever I yawn, someone beside me is bound to do same. I wonder if yawning is contagious. (I would really loved to be schooled about this so if you have ideas or opinion, I would love to hear from you. Comment below).

So back to my initial gist, I started feeling sleepy because I saw others sleep. People also yawn when others yawn. Others even laugh when they see and hear others laugh. I have also been in a bus where a man said something funny and people at the back started laughing. People at the front didn't hear what was said but only started laughing because others were laughing. The laugh was just too contagious.
I have also read that if you see two people laughing at a joke you didn't hear, chances are that you will smile even if you don't realize it. No wonder it is popularly said that laugh and the whole world laughs with you.

So my point is, if seemingly little things like this can be contagious, how much more the spiritual. If you can yawn because people around you are yawning, you can sleep because people around you are sleeping, you can laugh because people around you are laughing. How much more waxing cold spiritually because people around you are cold spiritually? How much more becoming hot because people around you are hot spiritually.

All I am trying to say is, to grow spiritually, it is important to watch your company. It is important to check those you spend time with. It is imperative to note the things you listen to, the things you watch and even read. Associate with those who love God. Remember that 1 Corinthians 15:33 says we shouldn't be misled for “Bad company corrupts good character.”
Ensure that you do not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers so that you can be a blessed man.
Just as Proverbs 22:24-25 advised, we shouldn't make friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest we learn his ways and entangle ourselves.

I am not trying to say that we cannot work with the lost, the downtrodden, and the people who need to find God and His message of eternal salvation. I am only pointing out that it is of essence that we choose our friends very carefully. Little wonder the Bible in Proverbs 27:17 says "Iron sharpens iron and one man sharpens the face of his neighbor.

  1. I have experienced such (people sleeping) but I determined not to sleep and I didn't. I think we can work on our subconscious mind. Spiritually we can attain such heights

  2. Sleeping can be contagious, yes I agree.
But one can still decide whether to sleep or not.
Thanks for the message, God bless you ma'am
